Specker Memorial Library

Welcome!

Specker Memorial Library provides academic resources for students, faculty and staff at Calumet College of St. Joseph. The library’s collection contains over 70,000 physical volumes of books and digital media, access to 75,000 e-books and subscriptions to over 80 academic databases.

Electronic resources are accessible to the college community both on- and off-campus and include EBSCO databases with full-text offerings, Westlaw and a wealth of additional services offered through Indiana State Libraries Inspire program. Free delivery of periodical articles and books not available at Specker Library can be borrowed from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan Service.

Reference and research assistance is also available through group and individualized library instruction and reference services.

Specker Library of Calumet College of St. Joseph provides information resources and services that support the college’s mission and educational programs. Librarians collect materials and furnish access to information across various formats to promote a liberal education, training for careers, and the development of lifelong learning skills for a culturally diverse student population.

The staff at Specker Memorial Library is committed to transforming our present facility into a library for the 21st century. We will create access to library information and services without regard to time and space limitations. We will create an environment within the physical library that is user friendly, student centered, and provides the tools necessary for research in a digital world. We will create a virtual library with electronic access to library information and services to our students, faculty and staff.

Reference Services and Library Instruction

Specker Library offers reference services and Library instruction from a professional librarian. In addition, all members of the college community (both on and off campus) can receive individualized help tailored to assist them with their questions, class assignments and projects. Faculty members can schedule instructional sessions for their classes and can also receive specialized acquisition assistance for their particular content areas.

Library Cards

The CCSJ photo ID card also serves as your library card and must be presented in order to check out library materials. Cards may be obtained through the Library Circulation Desk. ID cards must also be obtained in order to activate CCSJ’s network and email accounts.

Reserve Material

Instructors may place items on Reserve for use by students which may be obtained from the Circulation Desk. Reserve materials may be used in the library or can be checked out either in-house, overnight, or for three- or seven-day loan periods. Please see Specker Library’s Reserve procedures for forms and additional details.

Library Gift Policy

Since its founding, Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) has benefited from gifts of materials to Specker Memorial Library. The Library welcomes gifts that fall within the scope of its collecting activities and which support the College’s academic programs. Of particular interest are scholarly or rare items with research value that are in good physical condition.

Gifts of Money

Funds for Library purposes are always welcome. Information on making contributions to the Library, establishing endowment and naming opportunities may be obtained from the CCSJ Development Office, in consultation with the Director of Specker Memorial Library.

Gifts of Materials

The procedures of donating materials to the library: Books, DVD/Videos:

Intended donors of materials to the Specker Library should first contact the Library staff at (219) 473-4373 or email library@ccsj.edu to inquire and discuss the donation.

Upon receiving the list, the Director will review each item and select the materials that fit our curriculum and programs. The Director will then contact the donor. The donor will then either bring or ship the selected materials to the Library.

The College Library does not accept magazines or newspapers or any other materials that not related to our curriculum and instruction such as toys or decorations, etc.

Once the materials are accepted by the Library, the Library will become the owner of the materials and determine how to use them to best serve the College.
